The Association of Petroleum
Geologists (APG) organized the first lecture under the distinguished AAPG
Lecture Series. Dr Craig Shipp of Shell (E&P), USA and the distinguished
lecturer of AAPG, USA for the year 2006-2007 delivered two lectures on the
topics “Significance and Recognition of Mass Transport Deposits in Deepwater
Environments” and “Where Offshore Drilling Meets Shallow Geology: Impact of
Near-Surface Depositional Systems on Deepwater Operations” in Hotel Ashoka, New
Delhi on April 10, 2007.
The lecture was attended by Basin Managers, Head of the institutes and about 150
delegates and members of APG from ONGC, OVL, DGH, IOC, GAIL, ENI , CAIRN ENERGY
and students from BHU, Delhi University, Kurukshetra University and IIT, Roorkee.
Mr D. K. Pande, Director (Exploration), ONGC and Patron, APG welcomed the Chief
Guest and said “Deepwater team of ONGC has been deliberating on the issues
related to deepwater exploration in India for the last two days in Delhi and the
team will be immensely benefited by the expertise of Dr Craig Shipp in deepwater
processes”. Mr Pande, while congratulating the APG for organizing the talk on
such an important topic by such an eminent speaker, said that today’s lecture is
another feather in the cap of APG which made a humble beginning in the year
2001.
Dr Craig Shipp specializes in deepwater depositional environment and is the
leader of Geohazards Assessment Team, Shell International E&P, USA. He dwelt in
detail on importance of Mass Transport Deposits (MTD) and other deepwater
processes like Mass Wasting and Gas Hydrate formations and their potential as
Geohazards. He emphasized on the need to address Geohazards in deepwater
processes. Dr Shipp also detailed the Shell’s approach (3D Seismic assessment)
on Geohazards analysis in exploration and development in deep waters.
The lectures with focus on Geohazards became more relevant in to days time
keeping in view the current deepwater rig time cost as high as 600,000 US $ per
day. Mr Jokhan Ram, President APG, Mr D. P. Sahastrabudhe, Dr James Peters,
Vice-Presidents, APG also spoke on the occasion. Mr Anand Sahu, Secretary, APG
conducted the program.
